Just one or two fruits in its entire life, that is all a single pineapple plant will ever produce. 🍍

Did you know that? Under non-commercial conditions, it would take several years for the plant to reach its first flowering. In cultivation, this is triggered artificially with a flowering inductor. After that, the fruit still needs another four to eight months to ripen. Once the first harvest is in, a side shoot of the plant can grow a second fruit after about a year. And then it is over.

After two years of commercial use, the pineapple plant is left behind as waste, and on many farms it is then disposed of in ways that harm the environment. For us, that is exactly the exciting part of the story, because these plant residues hold robust fibres that can be put to use far beyond the field.
