Cotton is among the plants that require the most water and pesticides to cultivate anywhere in the world. 🌍
October 7th is World Cotton Day, a day that reminds us of the importance of cotton for the global textile industry and of how many people around the world make a living from growing it. At the same time, cotton cultivation has been under criticism for years, high water consumption and the use of pesticides are among the biggest challenges the industry faces. 🌾
Cotton is grown specifically for its fibre, the plant needs its own land, its own irrigation and its own season, regardless of whether anything else grows on the field. This shows how resource-intensive conventional fibre-growing land can be.
For us, this is not about a direct comparison, our fibres are meant for different applications, but rather about the question of what other ways there might be to obtain plant fibres. The fibres we gain from the pineapple plant do not come from land set aside specifically for them, but as a residue of a harvest that takes place for the fruit anyway. 🍍
World Cotton Day reminds us how different the paths to plant fibres can be, and how much potential lies in the alternatives that have received little attention so far.
We would be glad to show you how much potential lies in residues, just follow us for that. 🌿
