#Earth Overshoot Day
Earth Overshoot Day is over. Our resource problem isn’t. 🌍
Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity as a whole has used more natural resources than the Earth can regenerate within the entire year.
What this means in concrete terms: Everything we consume from that point until December 31 exceeds what our planet can regenerate within that year. And this is not happening for the first time. For decades, Overshoot Day has been moving earlier and earlier in the calendar. A trend that shows the increasing pressure on natural resources worldwide.
At the same time, Overshoot Day is not the same for every country. Each country has its own date, depending on its resource consumption in relation to its available biocapacity. Germany reached this point as early as May 10 this year, significantly earlier than the global average. This shows just how much resource consumption varies between countries.
One important question is how we deal with resources that already exist but are still barely used. Plant residues that remain in the fields after harvest and are often disposed of in environmentally harmful ways are one example.
At eco:fibr, this is exactly what we are working on: unlocking existing residues as a source of raw materials instead of using additional land or resources. 🍍♻️
turning waste into purpose.
