Behind every sugar cube lies a raw material most people have never heard of. 🌾
Bagasse is a byproduct of sugarcane processing, the fibrous residue that accumulates during the cooking of the raw material and the production of raw sugar. What happens to it afterwards follows a familiar pattern. It gets burned, used as fuel in sugar mills, or simply disposed of. And yet this material holds a fiber potential that has barely been tapped industrially. Bagasse consists largely of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, exactly the components that make plant-based raw materials interesting for industrial applications. 🌿
What makes bagasse particularly noteworthy is that it arises without its own cultivation or harvest cycle. The plant is grown for its sugar, the fiber is simply a byproduct, without additional land, without additional resource input. Worldwide, this process generates enormous quantities of plant-based fiber material that has barely been recognized as an industrial raw material. 🌍
What makes this even more interesting is that in many of the countries where pineapple is grown, sugarcane is processed at the same time. That means the same regions where we already work with plant-based agricultural residues also have large quantities of bagasse available as a potential raw material. That is no coincidence, but part of our approach to thinking regionally available residue sources together. 🍍
At eco:fibr, we are rethinking plant-based agricultural residues as an industrially usable raw material source, and we are not limiting ourselves to a single plant. Bagasse is one of the sources we are exploring as a potential option, as a resource-efficient complement for the paper, packaging and molded fiber industry, in places where conventional raw materials are coming under increasing pressure. 🍃
Maybe the raw material of tomorrow has been lying in the field all along.
